Well, many people have asked me some tips to start painting....Of course this is quite simple for our dear artist, but I thought I should do this to other people who, like my boyfriend (sorry Mike!) only know how to draw stick figures

Since we had a plant/tree competition quite soon, and sw released seeds and plants, why not to start with a simple, simple tree?

My mother teached me this when I was 5, and, since trees are not my speciality, I use this rule everytime I draw a plant, or a tree.

1 step! background, details....

I didnt used background on these, but make sure that you at least change the background colour (as an example, use the colour blue and paint some clouds, grass....)
Then, at maximum thickness and opacity, draw a line:

Step 2: Then using what I call the Young Fibonacci graph style Do two lines on that line, like this:

and do the same thing on that 2 lines, drawing 4 lines more soft and so and so, till you think its enough :P

Step 3: Now the leaves part! Dont forget, start ALWAYS with the darker colour, use it as a background and half of the opacity you use (check the image) Also, the pattern should look like the indicated on the right of the image:

Step 4: Then, using all the pallete of greens you want, play with the lighter colours, making lines with less thickness and higher opacity as shown on the picture (check pattern on the right side of the image):

And there! You can add shadows if you like (to more experienced users ) lines on the tree to give it more realistic look....Flowers (just do small spots of pink or white colour with half of the opacity used (about 20/30 is good)....

And there! Who said drawing a tree was hard? :P

I just wanted to thank you for posting this! I know that I hear a lot on how hard it is to draw with a mouse and "How do you do that?"
You really showed a simple way to creat something beautiful!

Woot! Woot!

Excellent tutorial Morgana! Way back when I first started here there were a lot of questions regarding how to draw trees.. hehe. Too bad this wasn't here then! Love that you took something as simple as that Y and showed how to easily turn it into something so much more. This is a tutorial everyone can use

Well done!
